Sustainable Brewers Survey

Sustainable Brewer's Survey

I have worked in energy and the environment for 40 years. For the past 5, reviewing beer has led me to many brewer's web pages. A lot of brewers are doing more than typical industries to address major environmental issues. All brewers apply an industrial process to agricultural products. Without healthy malt and hops, we would all be drinking Bartles & James. Craft brewers are younger, independent, for the most part well educated and understand most of these issue from both a practical and an engineering perspective. Many of the people who drink craft beer are environmentally aware and share sustainable values. The values of the people running the breweries, working in the breweries and buying their product, over lap.

Some people collect bugs or baseball cards. I gather data, put it into spreadsheets and play with it. From a survey of what is readily available on the Internet, I identified some 71 categories roughly grouped into engagement, building standards, energy efficiency, alternative energy, solid waste, water use, solid waste, carbon dioxide measures and sustainable or environmental certification. Engagement covers leadership or participation in environmental issues and involvement in community. Building standards refers to LEED certification or green building certification. Certification includes things such as Triple Bottom Line, Fair Trade, ISO 14001, Dow Jones Sustainability Index, State Green Tier Programs, and other sustainability, energy or environmental recognition or certification. My current list has identified 768 breweries - 227 international and 541 in the US - who have adopted 1 or more of these measures. While we can have long discussions on how these various activities should be weighted and how some might be more important than others, these breweries are engaged and feel what they are doing is important enough to tell people about it.

There are another 50 breweries that have 9 or more measures that I was able to uncover on the Internet. If you have information on brewers who deserve recognition for their environmental and community engagement, sustainability, water quality, environmental, energy efficiency, solid waste reduction, and other conservation activities, please contact me at: Romancing The Foam. I would like to hear their story.
