Mountain Dragon Mazery
Wild Harvest Special Reserve Honey-Mulberry Wine
A melomel is a mead made with fruit. Morat is a melomel made with mulberries. Mountain Dragon Mazery Morat Melomel Wild Harvest Special Reserve Honey-Mulberry Wine (10.17% alcohol by volume) is the only morat commercially made in North America. It is made with 76% West Virginia Wild flower Honey and 24% mulberries. The mead is standard strength and still. Removing the cork fills the area with big berry and honey aromas with the honey and berries pretty evenly matched. Alcohol aromas are mild and not hot or harsh. It pours brilliant cranberry red and quickly smooths out to a glassy reflectance with a well formed meniscus. A swirl of the glass produces light legs. Morat melomel is semi-dry and hits the tongue mildly sweet with a big mulberry and honey flavor leading to a drying finish. The tartness and tannins from the fruit work with the honey and leave a lingering, slightly astringent finish. The alcohol is smooth and clean and the fruit character is not raw, artificial or overpowering. The mead has a wine like palate and a medium body. I love this mead and rate it 89.
