2018 Memto Mori-Dandelion Wine
Enlightenment Wines 2018 Memto Mori-Dandelion Wine (15.0% alcohol by volume) is a still, sack strength (14.0% to 18.0% alcohol by volume), semi-sweet metheglyn (mead with added herbs and spices) made with hand picked foraged dandelion flowers, orange peel and wildflower honey. The mead smells as advertised, releasing aromas of floral, dandelion, and a light honey sweetness with a light wine quality. The fermentation character is clean and the aromatics are clean, characterful and complex. It pours bright copper gold with a clear meniscus, good reflectance and long, well formed legs. Memto Mori-Dandelion Wine has an impressive flavor profile as honey, a mild sweetness, dandelion, orange peel and alcohol flavors meld together and reflect off each other. You notice the dandelion from the start with a light honey sweetness. The orange peel comes in on the sides and contributes a little balancing bitter that carries through to the finish where some light tannins help dry things out slightly and lead to a long, pleasurable tail. The first drink to the last impress with how well all the parts work together with no element overpowering any other. The sweetness is balanced with no syrupy or cloying notes. The fermentation character is clean with no harsh, artificial chemical, or phenolic flavors. The alcohol flavors are smooth and not hot or solventy. This mead is special and stands alone. Drink it before or after a meal. I rate it 90.
