Yellow Belly Barrel-Aged Small Batch Cider
Sapsucker Farms Yellow Belly Barrel-Aged Small Batch Cider (6.5% alcohol by volume) is made from fresh pressed apples, sugar, and yeast and aged in recently emptied bourbon barrels. It won gold medals in the Great Lakes International Cider and Perry Competition in the wood-aged category in 2016 and 2017 and won a bronze in the wood aged category in 2018. The nose is relatively quiet. Apples lead the aromas with at least two distinct varieties followed up by a hint of caramel, bourbon, coconut and a hint of funk. It pours brilliant gold permeated by small streams of bubbles racing to the surface. It has good reflectance and a clear, well formed meniscus. There are no visible legs. The cider is effervescent and semi-dry with layered apple flavors lightly seasoned by oak, vanilla, bourbon, and coconut. The tartness is slightly less than lemonade levels. It has enough apple and oak tannins to flesh out the body and give a drying astringent note on the finish. this is a very enjoyable, refreshing cider packed with complex and layered apple flavors. I rate it 82.
