Traditions Ciderworks Pommeau Barrel Aged Apple Wine
2 Towns Ciderhouse Traditions Ciderworks Pommeau Barrel Aged Apple Wine (19% alcohol by volume) is made from bittersweet apples that are sweetened by aging at cool temperatures. The fresh-pressed juice is fermented and aged with apple eau de vie (apple brandy) and then aged in French oak barrels for a year. It smells of apples, ripe fruit, oak, alcohol and some white wine character. The wood aromas are in the middle and there are some dried fruit aromas underneath. It is still and pours brilliant amber gold with a light red orange tint. It has a clear meniscus and a swirl of the glass produces long, thick, well formed legs. The flavors are extraordinary, rich and sweet replete with honey, oak, dried fruit, golden raisins, dried apricots, apple and alcohol. You feel the oak on the tongue as the oak gives the cider texture and depth, a trace of spice and some tannins on the finish that provide a light astringent touch to balance the sweetness and keep the cider from being cloyingly sweet. The texture is thick and full bodied but not syrupy. The alcohol is big, packing th punch of a mixed drink but it is smooth and not hot or harsh. This is a classy, elegant cider for special occasions. I rate it 95.
