Alemar Good Thunder Washed with Surly Bender
Alemar Good Thunder Washed with Surly Bender is a semi-hard, pasteurized cows milk cheese produced in Mankato, Minnesota. It is made from the milk of 100% grass fed cows and it is washed weekly, for three weeks in Surly bender, an oatmeal brown ale. The cheese has an orange crust with a light dusting of white mold. The paste is beige with a creamy, fudgy texture. The cheese has a mild, funky, bloomy smell laced with cream, hints of grass, herbs, sweat socks, baby's breath, and Surly Bender. The cheese is full flavored, buttery rich, creamy and melts in your mouth with mushroom, meat, and cream. I am drinking a Junkyard Brewing Brewstand Boogie Northeast Double IPA and a Bee-Town Mead with Wild Blueberry with the cheese. The cheese has a bitter note on the finish that picks up on the beer's hops. The creaminess of the cheese extends and moderates the beer's citrusy, bitter notes and the fruity hop flavors. The beer's malty flavors remove the need to eat a cracker with the cheese. The beer and cheese work very well together. The blueberry flavors in the mead and the light honey sweetness suggests serving blueberry preserves or a light drizzle of honey with the cheese. The mead highlights the cheese's tangy, meaty, mushroomy, mildly funky side. The beer and cheese work very well as an afternoon snack while the mead and cheese suggest a dessert course. I rate the cheese and the pairings 85. Alemar Good Thunder Washed with Surly Bender is a go to cheese to pair with brown ales, semi-sweet meads, melomels, and ciders.
