Bierbrouwerij De Koningshoeven B.V.

Brewery, tap room
The Bierbrouwerij De Koningshoeven B.V. brews La Trappe beers. They are a Trappist Monastery located in the Netherlands and they started brewing beer in 1884 to help fund the monastery and support the monk's charity work. The Bierbrouwerij De Koningshoeven is the most commercial of the Trappist Monasteries and they lost the Trappist designation for their products in 1999. Monks had operated the brewery from, 1980 to 1999 but due to the size of the brewering operations and the decline in the number of monks, the Monastery rented their brewery out to a commercial concern. The Interantional Trappist Organization felt that the moks laced adequate control of the manufacture of the beer and took their trappist designaiton away. After lengthly negotiations, the Monastery agreed to involve monks more in the brewing of the beer and they regained the Trappist Designation for their products. They also sell Trappist biscuits, chocolate, sausage, beer bread and raisin bread.
The Monks started exporting their beer in 1985 and I found it shortly thereafter.
