Beer Sommelier Ben Vinken has worked in the beer industry for 32 years working for companies such as Palm and AB InBev. He is a distinguished publishers of beer-related publications and hosts a Belgian television show on beer and food. Cheese affineur (cheese ager) Michel Van Tricht has worked in the cheese industry for over 40 years and owns one of Europe's most distinguished cheese shops. In Beer and Cheese: 50 delicious combinations by Vinken & Van Tricht Ben Vinken selects 50 Belgian beers and Michael Van Tricht selects a cheese to pair with each beer. Out of Vinken's beer selections, I have had all but and they are all world class. For each beer Vinken provides a brief note about the beer and brewery and then provides his tasting notes. Van Tricht then recommends a cheese for pairing, briefly describes the cheese and notes why he chose the cheese for the particular beer. All of the pairings are excellent. The book's lavish illustrations approach beer and cheese porn will send the reader off in search of the beers and cheeses discussed. This book is more of a course in beer and cheese pairing than a guide book and is valuable if the reader can find the specific cheese and beer and have them while reading the book's review. Most of the beers reviews are available in the US but it will takes access to a good beer store to find them all. The cheese will also require access to a good cheese store. Many of the cheeses are raw milk cheese and it will be difficult to obtain the cheese in the US in the same level of ripeness that the authors' review. Western Europeans will enjoy the book because they will be able to find the beers and cheeses discussed and will have some familiarity with the authors and their work. Even though I can not find all the cheeses reviewed, I enjoy leafing through the book and fantasizing about the beer and cheeses.
