The Bottom-Feeders, Crooked Lawyers, Gossipmongers, and Porn Stars Who Created the 45th President
Joe Palazzolo and Michael Rothfeld
Joe Palazzolo works on the Wall Street Journal's investigations team and previously covered legal affairs for the Journal reporting on the courts, privacy, gun laws and federal law enforce4ment. He worked on the Journal team that won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for their coverage of secret payments to women with alleged affairs with Donald Trump. Michael Rothfeld is an investigative reporter for the New York Times Metro Desk. He formerly worked for the Wall Street Journal and was part of the same Wall Street Journal team that won 2019 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. Rothfeld also covered the investigation of Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen. In The Fixers: The Bottom-Feeders, Crooked Lawyers, Gossipmongers, and Porn Stars Who Created the 45th President Palazzolo and Rothfeld pull together all the dirt they dug up during their reporting on Trump for the Journal. The book is divided into two parts. the first two thirds covers the various Trump related deals and the last third details their unraveling. There is quite a bit on Trump's relationships with Joseph McCarthy's lawyer and mob boss Consigliere Roy Cohn and his role as Trump's attorney and mentor. A good chunk of the book covers the National Enquirer, the rise of David Pecker and the role of the magazine's role in promoting Trump, stifling negative stories that might hurt his image and smearing his opponents. Palazzolo and Rothfeld also cover Trump's affairs and the role of extortion attorney Keith Davidson in getting settlements for Trump's Paramours and the rise and fall of Michael Avenatti. The book includes plenty of background on both Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougall. They cover Michael Cohen in depth and paint him as a habitual liar who would do anything for Trump. The book is well researched and well written. Habitual watchers of CNN and MCNBC will be familiar with most of the stories reported in this book. This book fleshes the stories out with much more detail and ties up a lot of loose ends. Key take homes from the book are that Trump demands complete loyalty from those who serve him but shows no loyalty in return and in the end those who associate with him are left abandoned, with their reputations in ruin. The book is a fascinating, yet depressing read that should raise numerous concerns about our 45th President and those who associate with him.
