Delacroix and the Rise of
Patrick Noon and Christopher Riopelle
This magnificent book was published by London's National Gallery Company and the Minneapolis Institute of Art to accompany the exhibit Delacroix and the rise of Modern Art that showed at the Minneapolis Institute of Art from October 2015 through January 2016. The exhibit was very moving and this book makes it more meaningful. The authors provide a good background on Delacroix, his place in the art world, and what he brings to modern art. I especially appreciate their discussion of his choice of subjects, use of color, technique, emotion and passion and how these influence the artists who follow him. I also enjoyed their discussions of the interactions between various artists and how they studied each other’s work. This is a truly exceptional and informative book.
