An Appetite for Paris
A. J. Liebling
Legendary New Yorker writer A.J. Liebling loved boxing, horse racing and food. I read this book sitting in a Hospital emergency room for 8 hours during a flu epidemic. This work covers a year the 23 year-old Liebling spends in Paris in the late twenties celebrating his love of food and Paris. I picked it up at the recommendation of a food writer. His descriptions, dialog, and the characters he develops buttressed by his gentle humor make this a thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable book. And he knows how to write about food. Under better circumstances I might have enjoyed another book more, but for the moment, this was just what I needed. If you look with some appreciation back at times when men wore decent hats and food was more than eating, read this.
