A Beer Drinker's Guide to Knowing
and Enjoying Fine Wine
Jim Laughren is a Certified Wine Educator (CWE), wine expert, writer and consultant. In A Beer Drinker's Guide to Knowing and Enjoying Fine Wine Laughren Introduces beer drinkers to the world of wine. He begins by comparing how beer drinkers think and talk about their beverage of choice and how they are smiliar and how they differ. A good chunk of the book focuses on tasting, flavors and perceptions and this part of the book will benefit beer drinkers (and cider, wine and sake drinkers) even if they never touch a glass of wine. He provides terminology, tasting and evaluation tecniques that apply to other beverages. He also provides advice on cutting through some of the more lofty and esoteric wine BS. In the bulk of the book, Laughren gives a nickel tour of grape varieties and the geography of wine. In discussing the geography of wine he makes terroir understandable and helps the reader realize its importance. Laughren provides advice on developing your own wine style and how to pair wine with food. He finishes up with a few thoughts on wine cocktails and wine gadgets. Laughren is an entertaining and engaging writer and you will enjoy this book regardless of what you drink or don't drink. I highly recommend it.
