Cheese Beer Wine Cider:
A Field Guide to 75 Perfect Pairings
Steve Jones and Adam Lindsley
Steve Jones is wholly immersed in the world of cheese, starting with opening several cheese counters in the Midwest over 20 years ago. In 2006 he opened Steve's Cheese in Portland which evolved in the Cheese Bar four years later selling cheese with a casual restaurant. He has also directed the cheese department for a large national food distributor. He has also interned in affinage and marketing with London's Neal's Yard Dairy. Adam Lindsley is a Senior Communications Coordinator for KinderCare, a write of children's books and a writer for Serious Eats. Jones and Lindsley team up to write Cheese Beer Wine Cider: A Field Guide to 75 Perfect Pairings - a must have book for any lover of cheese, beer, wine, or cider. They kick off with a list of do's and don'ts for buying, storing and serving cheese, how to taste cheese and beverages, and some general principles of cheese and beverage pairing. You will buy the book for the pairings. The pairings are fairly evenly distributed between beer, wine and cider. Each pairing lists a cheese and identifies the cheese's family and milk source. They provide a couple of alternatives if you can not find the recommended cheese. If you can not find the cheese reviewed or one of its alternatives, a good cheese monger can steer you to an appropriate alternative. Jones and Lindsley provide similar information for the pairing beverage and a couple of alternatives. While my wine knowledge is limited, no matter where you live you should be able to find most of the beer or cider selections - or beer or cider from the style of the beverage reviewed. The beer and cider selections are top notch and their descriptions of the beers and ciders are spot on. The authors' descriptions of the cheeses, the beverages and the pairings will send you off the the cheese store and the beer and cider store to provision your fridge. I originally checked the book out from the library but as I read the book, I marked so many pages of beer and cheese and cider and cheese pairings that I wanted to try that I bought the book. The book is well illustrated and well written. If you are looking for a quick reference for beverage and cheese pairings this is your book. If, like myself, you love beer, cider and cheese, you will find your self eating and drinking your way through the book and you appreciation and understanding of cheese, beer, wine and cider will the better for it.
