Upper Hand Brewery
Escanaba Black Beer
My bottle of Upper Hand Brewery Escanaba Black Beer (4.5% alcohol by volume) is three weeks old. This is on the light end of the American Stout scale. It smells like grain and chocolate with no harsh or burnt roast aromas. There is a hint of sulfur and garlic and some very faint coffee. It pours deep dark brown with ruby highlights under a lacy 1" tan cap with moderate retention. Slightly tart upfront with traces of fruit and dark grains. The grains have no harsh or burnt roast flavors. Finishes very dry and has some slight chocolate astringency. It has a medium body and medium high carbonation. This is a flavorful dark ale with the malt profile of a Schwartzbier. I rate it 80.
