Tropical Torpedo Tropical IPA
My bottle of Sierra Nevada Brewing Company Tropical Torpedo Tropical IPA (6.7% alcohol by volume) was pacakged three and a half months ago which is a little long in the tooth for an American India Pale Ale. Since 2007 Sierra Nevada uses a special bottle cap with a super high density non-PVC subatance on the inside that reduces oxidation, which is a major cause of beers going bad over time, ten times better than other bottle caps. With the special bottle cap, Sierra Nevada Beers age slower and taste fresher longer. Tropical Torpedo pours bright gold with moderately fast rising bubbles under a 2.5" rocky, sticky, off-white foam cap with good retention. Tropical fruit aromas dominate the nose with medium low light toast malt and yeast aromas. The flavors start with big tropical fruit, papaya and citrus and lead up to a moderately high bitter accent. The fruit flavors are rich, complex and layered with the toasty malt flavors providing depth and the bitterness providing punch. Tropical Torpedo is very creamy with a medium body and medium carbonation. The luscious creaminess, rich fruit flavors and assertive bitter accent make this beer a treat to drink. I rate it 90.
