Beer Camp Across America Sweet Sunny South
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company Beer Camp Across America Sweet Sunny South (4.9% alcohol by volume, 23 International Bittering Units) is a collaboration between Austin Texas' Austin Beerworks, Arnaudville Louisiana's Bayou Teche Brewing, Athens Georgia Creature Comforts Brewing Company, Oakland Park Florida's Funky Buddha Brewery, Asheville North Carolina's Wicked Weed Brewing and Sierra Nevada. Sweet Sunny South's recipe includes corn grits, tea leaves and peaches, papaya, guava and prickly pear. It also includes Pilsner malt, acidulated malt and malted wheat. A hazy straw pour produces a 1" 3 minute white foam cap supported by continuous streams of rapidly rising bubbles. This is an active beer. One of the finishing hops is Huell Melon and the brewers have selected a saison yeast so the beer has fruit coming from three different directions. The nose easily detects fruit aromas from an arm's length away. Closer up the aromas become more tropical with a definite note of tea and it is hard to pin down which fruit aromas are added, come from the yeast or the hops. The palate is fruity with traces of tea especially with a tannin note of the finish. The fruit changes character as it travels across the tongue but it remains the dominant flavor. The body is light and while you can't taste the corn grits they show up in the body. The carbonation is medium high and it has some prickle. This is a full flavored and very refreshing beer that evokes Hawaiian punch but retains enough beer character to avoid being an alcopop. I rate it 85.
