Beer Camp Across America Stout of the Union Robust Stout
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company collaborated with Beachwood BBQ and Brewing, Port Brewing Company/The Lost Abbey, Bagby Beer Company, Societe Brewing Company, and the Smog City Brewing Company to create Beer Camp Across America Stout of the Union Robust Stout (7.3% alcohol by volume, 64 International Bittering Units). The beer sits on the cusp between an American Stout and an Imperial Stout. It pours dark brown with streams of very small slow rising bubbles supporting a 1.5" foam collar that takes three minutes to descend to a thick, sticky film. The beer has a very pleasant mix of grain, chocolate, coffee, dark sugar, and spice aromas. It drinks super creamy with a mousse-like texture that dissolves in your mouth to dark bittersweet chocolate and caramel followed by a coffee note and a slight drying and grainy astringency on the finish. The brewers achieve an almost mystical balance between the different elements. The body is medium full and the carbonation average but very soft and finely textured. The flavors are big but nothing is harsh, burnt or overstated. There is a mild alcohol warming but it is not hot or solventy. This is a very fine and well made beer. I rate Stout of the Union 89.
