New Grist Gluten-Free Pilsner Style Beer
Lakefront Brewery New Grist Gluten-Free Pilsner Style Beer (5.1% alcohol by volume) is a pilsner brewed with rice and sorghum. My bottle has a best by date 10 months from now which is a bit optimistic for a pilsner but it is far enough off in the future I know the beer is fresh. It has a mild, sweet aroma of slightly sweet earthy sorghum, noble hops and spice. It is brilliant straw with rapidly rising bubbles blanketed by a 1" frothy foam collar with reasonable retention. It is mildly sweet with a hint of apple, some sorghum and noble hops. It has a drying bitter finish with the sorghum a little sharp and the hops are a little harsh. The apple is a bit big and has a little tart cider quality but that masks some of sorghum's sharpness. The beer is light and the carbonation is high with a bit of prickle. This is an OK beer and a decent stand in for an American Standard Lager. While it has some sharpness, the apple helps mask it and improves the beer's drinkability. I give the beer an 80 as a gluten free replacement for an American Lager. As a beeer in general, I would rate it lower.
