My bottle of Deschutes Brewery Obsidian Stout (6.4% alcohol by volume) has a best by date 6 weeks after the date I am drinking it. It smells like chocolate, coffee, grain and spice with nothing harsh or burnt. There is just a hint of cinnamon. A deep dark brown liquid fills the glass as bubbles stream to the surface moderately fast and is crowned by a 1" lacy and persistent dark tan cap. The flavor reminds me of Mexican chocolate without the grit. It has chocolate and spice, some cinnamon, mildly sweet balanced by a chocolate coffee bitterness. A slight tang balances the initial sweetness as the beer dries out as it finishes. Add a handful of nuts and this would make an excellent gooey chocolate brownie. The body is medium full and the carbonation is medium high but very soft and creamy. The beer is rich and full flavored but not cloying. I give it 95.
