Exhaustdead Smoked Black IPA
My crowler of Clutch Brewing Company Exhaustdead Smoked Black IPA (7.5% alcohol by volume) was packaged today. It has a mild smoke and roast aroma with moderate malt and lighter hop and fermentation fruit notes. Nothing dominates and the aromas work well together. It drops bright dark brown under a massive robust lacy 4” light to medium tan cap with good retention. The beer looks dense and nearly opaque but it is not cloudy or murky. Exhaustdead has a mild sweet start with some smoke. Bitterness comes through mid palate and grows through the finish with some moderate drying. The smoke comes forward a little more in the finish and there is a touch of astringency. Exhaustdead leaves the mouth dry and wanting more. Bitterness works well with the smoke and dark malt. The body is medium plus body and the carbonation is medium low. This is an interesting full-flavored beer and has a light touch of smoke that grows as you drink it. I am drinking Exhaustdead with Satori old World Aged and Sharp Cheddar and the pairing works very well. I rate the beer 86.
