Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier*

Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan Weihenstephaner HefeweissbierBayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan has been brewing since 1040 A.D. Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier (5.4% alcohol by volume) sets the standard for German Weissbier. It smells of clove and banana with traces iof wheat, bread crust and a hint of smoke. Malt and yeast aromas are medium to medium plus, hop aromas are low. It pours hazy gold under a 2" rocky white foam cap with excellent retention. The beer is exceptionally creamy and mildly sweet leading with banana and clove supported by bread crumb suggesting banana bread in a glass. There is an exceptional balance between the malt and the yeast flavors. The beer has the beautiful, creamy texture that defines the style and which so few beer manage to achieve. The body is medium plus and the carbonation is above average. Weissbier does not come much better than this. The beer calls out for food. This one I am drinking with a piece of sourdough toast topped with thick bacon, lettuce and a duck egg over easy. It is also a delight with fish or saussage and I have a hard time not drinking this with aany kind of shnitzel or even just a plate of spaetzle. I rate this bottle 95. When it is fresh, it rates closer to 100.
