Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel*

Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier DunkelBayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel (5.3% alcohol by volume, 14 International Bittering Units, and 220 calories) is a Dunkles Weissbier (dark wheat beer). This dark, German wheat beer has a light moist dark banana bread aroma that hints of clove. It pours hazy dark auburn to chestnut under a 2.5" cream colored cap that approaches the texture of whipped cream. The cap has a very fine bead and good retention. Streams of bubbles leisurely rise to the surface. Banana bread flavors lead with hints of nuts and baking spices and traces of caramel and dark sugars. There is enough clove to let you know it is there but not too much to overpower. The beer is mildly sweet upfront with a hint of tart on the finish. Hop bitterness and flavors are low. The medium full bodied beer is very creamy and luscious with medium soft carbonation. I enjoy this elegant, very nicely made and well balanced banana bread in a glass with a plate of nieren in a creamy sauce over spaetzle or roast ham hocks over sauerkraut and roast potatoes. It also works well with the dessert course or all by itself on a cool afternoon. Like fresh baked bread, the fresher this beer is, the better it is. If you find it on tap, call up all your friends and drink until you drain the keg. I enjoy it immensely and rate it 90.
