Avery Brewing Company
The Kaiser Imperial Octoberfest Lager
Avery Brewing Company The Kaiser Imperial Octoberfest Lager at 9.73% alcohol by volume is a bit muscular for a Märzen which usually weigh in around 5.8 to 6.3% alcohol by volume. Its 25 international Bittering Units are at the high end of the range for the style (18-24) but its bigger heft needs the extra hop presence for balance. In a standard lager glass it pours brilliant rose tinted amber while in a liter mug, its darker, closer to brilliant chestnut. The pour kicks up a moderate cream colored foam cap with average retention. Malty aromas, white bread, bread crust, grainy spice, light alcohol and a hint of spicy hops rise from the glass. This malt forward beer starts lighly sweet on the palate with layered malt flavors of white bread, bread crust, a hint of cardamon, and light kettle sugars. As it moves across the tongue, it dries slightly and a mild bitterness and alcohol provides some balance to the malt. The alcohol is soft and not harsh or hot. The medium to medium low carbonation is very soft and creamy. There is no prickle in this beer. The body is chewy and rich. I rate this beer 95. Try it with Deer Creek The Moon Rabbit Cheese.
