August Schell Brewing Company
Schell's Schmaltz's Alt
I first started drinking August Schell Brewing Company Schell's Schmaltz's Alt (5.1% alcohol by volume) in 1992 Schell's first brewed it. At the time it was a reasonably priced six-pack with good flavor. It still is. It pours brilliant chestnut under a rocky and clingy 2” cream colored foam collar with good retention that leaves thick lace. It offers a range of malt aromas and malt spice, faint anise or licorice, and some faint fruit. Rich malts roll over the tongue with some sweetness on the attacks, some hints of root beer and licorice and then it dries out in the finish. In the aftertaste it oscillates between malt and dry and finally it settles down to a mild lingering sweetness backed by a moderate chocolate bitter accent. Schmaltz's Alt has medium body and medium to medium high carbonation. I have always thought of Schmaltz's Alt as a good value beer. I rate it 85.
