Schell’s Fort Road Porter
August Schell Brewing Company Schell’s Fort Road Porter is an English Style Brown Porter (4.8% alcohol by volume). My can was packaged two months ago. Cracking the can releases medium low nutty bread notes supported by biscuit and light toast with a hint of chocolate. Hop aromas are low.
It drops brilliant brown with ruby highlights under a rocky 2” medium tan persistent foam cap. You will enjoy the beer for its smooth, complex malt flavors. Some chocolate leads with nuts, bread, bread crust, and light toast finishing with a moderate very pleasant woody bitter. There are no burnt or harsh roast flavors. The hops are mild and earthy with bitterness just below medium. The beer dries on the finish and the bitter pleasantly lingers lightly seasoned by the malt. Up front the balance is to the malt but in the finish the balance shifts slightly to the hops. The beer is creamy with a medium body and carbonation and feels good in your mouth. I rate this delicious, flavorful, complex English porter a 84 and enjoy it immensely.
