Samuel Smith's Organic Cherry Fruit Beer
Samuel Smith Old Brewery (Tadcaster) Samuel Smith's Organic Cherry Fruit Beer (5.1% alcohol by volume) is a pale ale brewed with pure organic cherry juice. It is USDA certified organic. Prying off the cap releases very big cherry aromas that spread out over the table. Closer up cherry remains dominant but biscuit aromas in the background evoke a fresh cherry tart. As it warms the malt aromas come forward and it grows more cherry pie like in smell. Hop aromas are very low, malt aromas are moderately low, and cherry aromas are high. It pours hazy dark cherry red under a 2" pink tinted foam blanket with good retention. Streams of bubbles rise rapidly. The flavors are cherry biscuit up front but become much more cherry dominated in the middle and then it ends with cherry pie. It has a light cherry tartness that provides some balance supported by a deft touch of hops. It starts mildly sweet but dries slightly on the finish. A very pleasant slightly tart cherry lingers supported by a hint of tea-like bitter. It has a very creamy mousse-like texture and very soft carbonation in a medium body. This is an interesting and complex beer. The cherry is very big but does not completely dominate the malt. I rate it 85.
