Paulaner Brauerei GmbH
Paulaner Original Munich Lager*
Paulaner Brauerei GmbH Paulaner Original Munich Lager (aka Paulaner Original Münchner, Paulaner Premium Lager) (4.9% alcohol by volume) initially exudes a big cracker smell observable from an arm's length then closer up fresh malts, light grains, bread crust, bread crumb and medium low levels of spicy hops come into focus. It pours brilliant gold permeated by streams of rapidly rising bubbles helping to extend the life of a 1/2" off-white blanket of foam with moderate retention. A faint trace of movie popcorn butter quickly passes on the palate giving way to rich malts. Bread crumb stakes out the sides while fruity herbal hop flavors and bitterness lay claim to the finish joined by a mild drying. The malt flavors are moderate with a range of light melanoidins while the hop bitterness and flavors are slightly below the malt in intensity. The body is medium light and the carbonation is medium. This is a layered and complex blend of malt flavors nicely balanced by mellow hop bitterness and flavor. I rate it 90.
