About Romancing the Foam
Romancing the Foam celebrates the responsible enjoyment of beer. It includes local restaurant reviews from a beer drinker's point of view, reviews of beer, discussions on the enjoyment of beer, beer and food, and reviews of books on beer and cooking.
This web site also focuses on sustainable brewing and breweries. Brewing brings together an industrial process with an agricultural product. Climate changes impact the crops brewers depend on such as hops and barley and impact brewers that depend on natural cooling in their brewing process. Beer is over 90% water and brewers use as much as 7 gallons of water for every gallon of beer they produce. Access to plentiful clean water is critical for brewing. Over the past 5 plus years of researching beer, the number of sustainable brewers I uncovered is impressive. Well over 10% of brewers go well beyond industry norms to produce sustainable beer. This website will celebrate their work.
I'm Pat Mulloy, a BJCP National Beer Judge, a BJCP Mead Judge, a member of the American Homebrewer's Association, Master Brewer's Association of the Americas and the Brewer's Association. I made a couple of feeble attempts at brewing in the 60's and 70's but home brewed pretty seriously from 1980 through 1990. During my half century plus of beer drinking I have sought out anything new or different. I really like beer - over the past 4 years I have reviewed over 3000 beers - most of them are on Beeradvocate.com and I am gradually adding them to this site. My wife Nancy drinks wine and has more conventional beer tastes than I. When reviewing a beer, I often get her opinion.
I also publish a monthly newsletter, Romancing the Foam, and send it out by email. Click on the Newsletters tab for the most recent or send email firstname.lastname@example.org and ask to subscribe. I welcome comments and suggestions. Click on the contact box or email me at email@example.com.
The beer tab leads to reviews on beer. The books tab leads to book reviews, primarily on beer. The Food tab covers restaurants, beer and food. The Breweries tab leads to information about breweries. I have a 40 year career in energy and the environment and have crawled through the Internet looking for information on sustainable brewers. The results will appear on the Sustainable Brewing tab.
